GS1 South Africa is a not-for-profit organization, its mission being to lead the design and implementation of global standards to improve the supply and demand chain. Formerly known as EAN South Africa, GS1's goal is clearly aimed at the simplification of global commerce by connecting the flow of information with the flow of goods. We will continue to develop as a standards and (related) services organization, offering a diversified portfolio of products and services across multiple sectors and industries.

GS1 DataBar, what’s the story behind the story
By 2010, GS1 DataBar standards will be available for bilateral agreement between trading partners for all trade items. The specific focus will be on Fresh Products scanned at POS. By the target date of 2014, GS1 DataBar standards including attribute information (using AI’s) can be used by all trading partners in an open environment. At minimum retailers should be able to scan GTINs in a GS1 DataBar.

Unauthorised Bar Code Numbers
The use of unauthorised bar code numbers undermines the integrity of the GS1 System. Unauthorised Resellers are selling GS1 Keys without the controls put in place by GS1 which creates a threat to the integrity of the system due to the fact that their uniqueness and ownership cannot be confirmed. Make sure you have a valid, legal bar code number which has been obtained directly from a GS1 Member Organisation.
